DeKalb County This Week: Reaction to tensions in Europe, Stage Coach Players to hold auditions

Recent attacks in Ukraine by Russia military forces could quickly create a humanitarian crisis among other ripple effects, including higher gas prices.

There is another reason NIU political scientist Ches Thurber says Americans should follow the developments overseas.

“Both the United States and Russia have nuclear weapons,” Thurber noted. “And while that is a remote possibility that we'd see kind of direct conflict between the United States and Russia, the fact that the stakes of that conflict could be so incredibly high make it worthy of a lot of attention and a lot of focus.”

Thurber also stressed the possibility of the continued use of cyber warfare to disrupt life in Ukraine and beyond.
