The U.S. Department of Treasury is looking to select a woman who is notable for her work with democracy. Rockford University alumna, Jane Addams, is a candidate.
Rockford University’s most famous alumna was the first woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. That is why Rockford University is supporting Jane Addams as the new face of the $10 bill.
Donnette Tinsley, director of the Jane Addams Center for Civic Engagement, said the reason Rockford University is pushing for Jane Addams is for her work in the areas of democracy, peace and suffrage.
“She was known around the world for her peace initiatives.”
University spokesperson Rita Elliott said Jane Addams is deeply connected in her history with the university.
“From a university standpoint, we just wanted to do our part to uplift an alumna and a very notable and historical figure that made a big impact in the United States and across the world.”
Tinsley is excited about the prospect.
“I did hear she’s on a list with many important women of that time, and I would think she has a pretty good chance.”
The U.S. Treasury is seeking public input on which woman would be the best choice to appear on American currency.
