Governor Pat Quinn this week announced emergency administrative rules for storing petroleum coke.
According to a news release, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency will submit rules to the Illinois Pollution Control Board that would set statewide standards for any facility that manages or stores petcoke or related materials. That includes a requirement for total enclosure of petcoke during its transport, processing and storage.
The IEPA has been working with federal, state and local officials after residents complained about the risk of negative health effects from petcoke dust.
