Nicholas Sheley says his right to a speedy trial has been violated in his Whiteside County case. Sheley was arrested in 2008 following a killing spree in Illinois and Missouri. SaukValley.com reports, the motion comes more than a month before the 33-year-old Sterling man is set to go to trial in the death of 93-year-old Russell Reed.
In a motion filed with the court, Sheley asks presiding Judge F. Michael Meersman to “undergo an extensive and thoroughly detailed analysis” of several motions and pretrial hearings since the case began last year.
Jury selection in the case is scheduled to begin October 22nd. Prosecutors and police believe Reed was the first of eight people killed by Sheley during a drug- and alcohol-fueled killing spree in late June 2008. He already is serving life without parole for the death of Ronald Randall of Galesburg.
