Perspective: Don't Let Discrimination Slide

I can still recall the spit that freckled my face as two of my peers howled at me for believing in the “hoax” commonly referred to as identifying as nonbinary.

Or rather, the numerous walks through the hallways that have been laced with unintentionally racist, sexist, homophobic remarks made by my beloved classmates. I’m confident in saying that stumbling across ignorance is an almost universal experience. An utterly distasteful one, too. Time and time again, I’ve witnessed my peers sweep discriminatory comments under the rug; deeming anyone offended as merely “too sensitive.”

As a leader of my high school’s Operation Snowball – a biannual retreat that fosters discussion and community-building – I am exposed to the intimate insights and emotions of my peers. Although the stigma surrounding mental health is still unfortunately prevalent, the American public is definitely beginning to acknowledge its consequences. Every individual has internal struggles to cope with on a daily basis. Because of this, it is so important to extend kindness and consideration to those around you. Discriminatory remarks have intensely destructive effects; everyone has an obligation to know better than to just “let it slide.” Albeit intimidating, I’ve realized it is pretty easy -- and incredibly critical -- to correct ignorant comments. A simple “that’s probably not something to joke about” has blossomed into countless constructive, enlightening discussions.

So, I implore you to avidly avoid ignorance, nuance your beliefs, and practice unconditional kindness. The pervasive nature of hatred in this world is devastating; and we can all do our part to combat it with open-mindedness, consideration, and compassion.

I’m Natalie Glawe, and that’s my Perspective.
