Perspective: Feathers, Beads, And Beignets

I had started writing my perspective about some dreary, political topic when it dawned on me that it would air on Mardi Gras -- so I happily changed gears to immerse myself in all things carnival!

If we were living in Brazil, Portugal, Venezuela, or for that matter, Louisiana, we would have a holiday today. Instead, maybe you could pop out and find a King Cake, decorated with purple, green and yellow icing, beads, coins and a tiny, plastic baby. I’m sure it would brighten your family’s or co-workers’ day, if you decide to share it.

Over-indulgence, of course, is expected on Fat Tuesday, which in many cultures is the final blowout after months of overeating, and it precedes the 40 days of abstinence before Easter. Not ever having participated in the Lent ritual, I still realize it’s time for what I call my winter weight season to wind down. It’s been accelerating since the candy corn in October through to the chocolate in mid-February.

Like many of our celebrations, including Valentines, Mardi Gras has pagan roots. One theory is that it originated from ancient celebrations of spring and fertility rites, at least in the northern hemisphere.

In my mind’s eye Mardi Gras is a swirling kaleidoscope of feathers, beads, and beignets -- all second line dancing to trombones and snare drums.

I’m Paula Garrett -- wishing you a Happy Fat Tuesday, no matter how you celebrate it!
