The Elgin City Council recently advanced a proposal that would ban single-use plastic bags at major retailers

Under the proposed ordinance, qualifying retailers would be prohibited from offering single-use plastic bags to shoppers at checkout.

Retailers would instead offer recycled paper bags for a fee of 10 cents per bag.

Customers could also use their own reusable bags.

The proposed ordinance awaits full consideration at the March 11 Elgin City Council meeting.
