Local artists are needed for a DeKalb historical mural project

City of DeKalb

Artists are needed to work on a DeKalb project that will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and two other historical elements.

The city of DeKalb’s Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission is accepting bids for a mural project that highlights Lincoln Highway, Abraham Lincoln and America250. Brad Hoey is the chair of the commission. He is encouraging local artists to submit.

“We have so many great artists and artisans here within our own local community,” he said. “And since this is a public art initiative, we really want to provide a canvas or an opportunity for those talented people.”

Hoey said some of the funds for the project will be supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This grant will support the theme "America250."

“So even though we're soliciting artists for now, this will be an ongoing project that will go into next year,” he said, “and part of the reason that we're not starting it right away or starting the actual painting this year is because we need to have an artist identified for the grant application through the NEA.”

The mural will cover the side of a building located on the corner of Lincoln Highway and Seventh Street. Submission and deadline information can be found on the City of DeKalb’s website.
