Rauner Talks About Illinois' Problems To University of Chicago Students

Governor Bruce Rauner is outlining what he sees as Illinois’ biggest problems.

Rauner is a venture capitalist. Before he was governor, he’d buy up companies and make structural or staffing changes to make them profitable.

Rauner seems to be taking a similar approach as Illinois’ governor. He gave a 28-slide PowerPoint presentation highlighting some of what he saw as Illinois’ problems to University of Chicago students.

"Our bureaucracy is sucking a lot of that money out of the system that could be going to the families that deserve it and need it."

One slide showed a high number of people leaving Illinois. Another showed fewer state government workers are making more money.

Rauner repeated that raising taxes won’t fix the state’s unsustainable costs. And he also touched on what he called a conflicted political system.

"We’re one of the few states that elects judges. Your average voter has no clue who they’re voting for. And trial lawyers are unlimited in their ability to make campaign contributions to judges. ... This is a problem."

Rauner says he wants to recruit businesses to come to Illinois from neighboring Midwestern states. He didn’t focus on solutions in his presentation.
