Illinois Secretary Of State's Office Unveils New License Plates

Illinois Secretary of State's Office

Abraham Lincoln stands prominently on the left side of the new plates. The Chicago skyline, blue skies, and the capitol building fill the background.

These new license plates will be available in January when the Secretary of State’s office will begin replacing older license plates at no extra cost to taxpayers.

According to a state news release, Secretary of State Jesse White says the office will notify residents who need to replace their license plates, and then send them through the mail.

“We want to make sure that now and in the future, all license plates are replaced," White said. "License plates’ reflectivity decreases with age, impacting law enforcement’s ability to identify them."

The replacement cycle will continue each year through 2027.

“The oldest license plates will be replaced first. Beginning next year, passenger plates that were made in 2000 and 2001 will be replaced," White said. "Each year, my office will continue to replace older license plates with new ones."

White urges residents to recycle old plates at a Secretary of State facility or a tamper-proof bin.
