Yesterday was the first live day of Rockford’s new phone system.
The original system consisted of five separate, outdated ones. The new system consolidates the five segments into one modern system.
Information technology director Glenn Trommels says the system will reduce the cost for city-wide communications and better serve constituents. He says the city expects to save at least $150,000 per year.
All city departments but police moved to the new phone system. Rockford Police Department will join in when they move to their new location.
The new city numbers have a "779" area code. For more information, Trommels says residents can call 779-348-7300.
