What impact does our diet play on our aging bodies? Can proper nutrition slow the aging process down? Join Amy Daniel, MSN, RN from Northern Illinois University and DeKalb Home Instead to discuss the benefits of nutrition and the importance it plays in the aging process. Some of the topics discussed will be the impact of nutrition on diabetes, cancer, inflammation, heart health and more. Physical therapists have a unique role to play in helping to promote public health and reverse the trend toward chronic illness. Chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are becoming more and more common, even among younger people. However, lifestyle changes – especially increased movement – help to prevent and manage these illnesses.
Learn more at the next STEM Café with physical therapist and Clinical Assistant Professor Sarah Greenhagen. Professor Greenhagen and NIU physical therapy students will explore the role of physical therapy in helping to improve overall health and quality of life for people of all ages.
Northern Illinois University STEM Cafés are part of NIU STEAM and are designed to increase public awareness of the critical role that STEM fields play in our everyday lives. They are offered in partnership with the NIU Alumni Association and made possible with support from Bayer Fund.

Held on the third Thursday of each month, Memory Cafés provide a safe place for those experiencing memory loss and their care partners to socialize and have fun with others in similar situations.
During these informal gatherings we’ll start with a familiar song and a “get to know you” question. Followed by a presentation or activity with a simple craft, game, or shared reading to spark memories and conversations. Then we’ll close the program with another short singalong.
At each Café there will be a table with free resources and giveaways, along with books to check out. Snacks, tea, and coffee will be served.
First time attendees please email Susan at susang@dkpl.org or call (815) 756-9568 ext. 2114 and give names of care partner and guest.

Give the Gift of Life! The American Red Cross will be conducting a blood drive at the DeKalb Public Library.
American Red Cross blood donors are critical to ensuring those in need receive relief and care. Right now, we’re urging donors to continue to help us strengthen the blood supply as we head into spring. Donors of all blood types – particularly type O blood donors – are crucial to meeting daily hospital demands.
An advance appointment is preferred. Visit the American Red Cross website, type in your zip code, and select the DeKalb Public Library to make an appointment, or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or ask questions about giving blood.
