Spring is here and NIAAA is having our 2nd photo contest. We hope to have all nine counties we serve represented. We are looking for an iconic photo to represent each county: it should be something easily recognizable, a hidden treasure or notable view.
Please remember, this contest is open to everyone so please feel free to submit your own entries.

This annual competition is open to artists living in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The Freeport Art Museum's annual Regional Juried Exhibition (RJE) mission is to offer established and emerging artists the opportunity to debut work created in the last two years. Opening on Saturday, May 10, 2025, the show runs through July 19, 2025. As FAM has gained a distinguished reputation for displaying a wide range of contemporary art, this exhibition has become a visitor's favorite.
Each year, FAM invites a new juror to select approximately 50 artworks for inclusion, and to give awards for first, second, third place, and honorable mention. This year's juror is Rodrick Whetstone, an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design teaching in the Department of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Award winners are announced at the opening reception.
The museum is open 10-5 Tuesday-Friday; 12-5 Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday
The Putnam County Public Library District invites the public to a special Movie Matinee screening of the documentary, “Monkey Business: The Adventures of Curious George’s Creators,” on Tuesday, June 3rd at 1:00 p.m. at the Granville Branch.
While many know Curious George as the world’s most beloved mischievous monkey—with more than seventy-five million books sold in over twenty-five languages since 1941—few are familiar with the extraordinary true story behind his creation. This engaging documentary explores the lives of Hans and Margret Rey, the German Jewish couple who brought Curious George to life. What began as a honeymoon in Paris turned into an extended stay, culminating in their first children’s book. In 1940, as Nazi forces invaded France, the Reys fled on hastily assembled bicycles, taking only a few personal belongings—including the original manuscript of Curious George. Their incredible journey as refugees eventually brought them to New York City, where they rebuilt their lives and created a literary legacy that continues to captivate readers of all ages.
The film runs approximately 81 minutes, is not rated, and is made available through public performance rights provided by Kanopy. This program is free and open to the public. The screening will be held at the Granville Branch, located at 214 S. McCoy Street, Granville. For additional information, please call the Library at (815) 339-2038.
This is an historic portrayal of Elizabeth Packard who was wrongly committed to an Illinois insane asylum in 1860 by her husband. Laura Keyes has been doing portrayals of historic figures since 2008 and due to in depth research by Kate Moore, the author of the book "The Woman They Could Not Silence," she will use some of Elizabeth's own words from her memoir and other writings. Elizabeth regained her freedom and went on to advocate for women's rights in Illinois and elsewhere.
This event can be viewed at the Durand Library in the Durand School at 200 W. South St, Durand or online. Please email villagelibrary@cusd322.org to receive registration information and link to zoom presentation.
