Putnam County Public Library District to Host Historian Tom Emery for 'Stories of Historic Illinois Women'

The Putnam County Public Library District is pleased to announce a special presentation by historian and author, Tom Emery, titled “Stories of Historic Illinois Women.” This engaging and informative program will offer attendees an opportunity to explore the extraordinary lives and legacies of influential women throughout Illinois history.

Drawing from his latest book, Emery will shed light on both well-known and lesser-known figures whose contributions have helped shape the state and the nation. Among the women featured are Jane Addams, Nobel Peace Prize-winning social reformer; Gwendolyn Brooks, the first African American to receive a Pulitzer Prize; and Bessie Coleman, a groundbreaking African American aviator. In addition, Emery will highlight lesser-known but equally compelling figures, including Mary Ann “Mother” Bickerdyke, a legendary Civil War nurse known for her fearless battlefield service; Myra Bradwell, a pioneering legal advocate who broke barriers for women in law; and Lottie Holman O’Neill, Illinois’ first female state legislator and a champion for women's rights.

This program will take place on Thursday, July 10th at 6:00 p.m. at the Granvile Library, located at 214 S. McCoy Street. For more information, please contact the Putnam County Public Library District at (815) 339-2038.
