A Janesville organization that normally does Father’s Day events is doing something special for mothers this month.
The Rock County Historical Society will have a quilt exhibition fundraiser to commemorate Mother’s Day. Karla Keller is a volunteer at the Society. She said she and a friend have vintage quilts that they showed at the society last year.
“And then," she said, "we thought, ‘Well, this time we're going to use local quilters, because we cannot hang any of those, or put any of those out, you know, for the public to be seen.’ And because I've been quilting and have bunch of quilting friends, everybody thought this would be a good way to showcase their quilts.”
Keller explained where the show’s name came from.
“Airing of the quilts, that's how people back in the 17, 1800s cleaned their quilts,” she explained. “So, they hung them up, not necessarily always outside, but they did hang them up inside. And … well airing like having the air blow around them and help with cleaning them.”
“Airing of the Quilts” will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11, at the Society. The event will include an ice cream social, demonstrations and a story walk.
