Strike Continues: No Classes Monday At Rock Valley College

Rock Valley College

Rock Valley College faculty members rejected a mediator's proposal that could have ended their strike.  Union members gathered to review the latest five year contract from the school and voted to reject it at a meeting Sunday night at the Unitarian Universalist church in Rockford..

The two sides met for 10 hours Friday and were given a plan to consider by a mediator working on the contract dispute.

Union president Michael Youngblood says faculty members were concerned about increased costs of health care under the proposal. Teachers will be back on the picket lines Monday morning.

In a strongly-worded release sent out Sunday night, the administration called the union's demands "unrealistic."

"There is simply no other work force in the in this region, and perhaps in this state, which has had the opportunity for such a guaranteed package in such difficult economic times. One has to ask, what more do they want? How much more does this union want to take from the students and the taxpayers of this region to fund what amounts to a compensation package which would be the envy of the region?"

The release from RVC says it will have to revert to the final proposal offered to faculty members last week  as it tries "to move forward and salvage the rest of the semester."
