Rockford Board of Elections Setting Up Drop Box For Mail-In Ballots

Rockford Board of Elections

The Rockford Board of Elections is setting up a secure drop box for mail-in ballots.

The box will be installed near the corner of 6th Street and 2nd Avenue and available for people to drop off mail-in ballots starting October 1st. Board Executive Director Stacey Bixby said it’s being done in response to the pandemic. She said the Board has received more than 13,000 vote-by-mail applications.

“In the last presidential election, we had roughly 14,000 early voters come into our office and vote," she said, "but we still only had about 4,000 people that requested a vote-by-mail ballot and returned it to us.”

Bixby said voters can also walk-in these ballots to the Board’s office, or send them in by mail as long as they’re postmarked by November 3rd.  She also reminded voters that if they've already signed and sent in a vote-by-mail application, there is no need to send in another presented by a third party.

Ogle County is offering a similar secure drop box, while DeKalb County’s clerk said he’s weighing different options.
