Lake Co. Sheriff's Office Warns Residents Of Phone Scam

The Blue Line

Lake County residents should be careful of a scam where callers are posing as sheriff officials. That's according to the county sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office says community members are reporting fraudulent phone calls where the phone number looks like it came from the office on a caller I.D. Officials say the caller allegedly says they are calling about a filed complaint about the resident, then gives the recipient the name and number of an investigating officer.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office says those types of notifications that actually come from them don't occur over the phone.

Another scam involves a caller claiming they're from the IRS and are working with the sheriff's office. Sheriff officials say they don't obtain warrants on behalf of the IRS.

The Lake County Sheriff's office says to contact them if residents believe they're a target in either scam.
