Quiz Tests Knowledge Of First Cross-Country Highway

Studying for a quiz usually involves reading textbooks, reviewing notes, and staying up late the night before.  But a road trip across northern Illinois is just what the teacher ordered to get ready for theonline Lincoln Highway quiz.

The 20 questions test your knowledge of the 35 murals that adorn the highway from Linwood near the Indiana border to Fulton on the Mississippi River. That will give you an in-person look at the murals, as well as the opportunity to see the sights in some two dozen communities along the way.

Not every answer is strictly about the murals themselves. Some of them are rather arcane. For example, you’ll need to know about one lady who gushed about America’s first transcontinental highway and who was the 34th President of the United States, among other things

You also can study the murals atthe Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition website, which offers a map and quite a bit of historical information.  However, you’d miss out on the antique stores, ice cream parlors and historical sights in more than two dozen communities along the route.

The Illinois portion of the Lincoln Highway is the only segment of America’s first transcontinental route that has been designated a National Scenic Byway.

We also invite you to revisit the WNIJ series featuring Perspectives writer Dan Libman's bicycle trip along the section of the Lincoln Highway that actually got it all started, along with other stories.
