Semi Truck Struck By Train At Rural Winnebago Crossing: 1 Dead

Google Maps Street View

The driver of a semi-trailer truck carrying corn was killed Wednesday morning when his truck was struck by a train at a rail crossing in rural Winnebago County.

The collision took place at 9:14 A.M at a crossing in Winnebago in the 2700 block of Alworth Road.  The northbound semi was hit by a Canadian National freight train traveling east.

The crossing has signals but no gates.  Deputy Chief Scott Meyers of the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says a number of witnesses working at a grain elevator nearby saw the crash and reported that the signals were working.  Meyers says it’s not yet clear why the truck went through the crossing.  Meyers says the Sheriff’s Office is working with the Illinois State Police and investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board to try to ascertain the cause or causes of the crash.  As of this Wednesday evening, the deceased man’s name has not been released.
