Governor Rauner Accuses House Democrats Of Killing State Budget Deal

Jenna Dooley / WNIJ

Governor Bruce Rauner is now accusing Illinois House Democrats of killing a deal to end the budget impasse.

When the so-called grand bargain failed last month - Senate Democrats said it was because Rauner had pulled Republican votes away from the compromise.

Rauner shared a new accusation; he claims House Democrats sent leaders of special interest groups to attack Senate Democrats in order to blow up the grand bargain.

RAUNER: I’ve got a lot of good friends in the Senate Democratic caucus. Most of them are there for the right reasons and they’re very policy oriented. They’re trying to do things to improve the quality of life for the people of Illinois and they’re willing to compromise and negotiate, but over in the House; the House isn’t very policy focused, they’re very focused on loyalty to Speaker Madigan.

A Madigan spokesman calls that a belated attempt by Rauner to cover up his own derailing of the deal.
