It's been about two months since Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner approved changes to the state's concealed carry law. It was the first amendment since the law's creation.
Dennis Leifheit is a northern Illinois concealed carry instructor. He says a big change approved by Rauner was no longer requiring a firearm owner to unload the gun if it will be left in a car. Leifheit says it was a safety issue.
"Any time you're loading a gun, you're putting ammunition into a gun, and now it's easy to fire; and if you unload it, there's always the possibility of an accidental discharge," Leifheit said.
The state's concealed carry law was created in December 2013. Since then, the state has only revoked a couple hundred permits.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Gary Dumdie says none of those are in DeKalb County.
"It's one of those privileges, like getting your driver's license -- you really don't want to lose it,” Dumdie said. “So I think that people are extra careful, that they are abiding by the law."
There are about 291 active concealed carry permits in DeKalb County, making it the county with the fewest permits in the state. About 100,000 people in Illinois have permits, and more than 11 million people nationwide have permits.
