With property tax bills scheduled to be mailed out in May, a timely educational presentation has been scheduled to provide an overview of the property assessment system in Illinois and how assessments support the fair distribution of the property tax burden among taxpayers. The guest speaker will be Tom Hughes, Winnebago County Supervisor of Assessments.
The presentation will cover available homestead exemptions and preferential assessment programs, including farmland assessments, the Conservation Stewardship Program, and the Forestry Management Program. The session will also detail sales ratio studies and equalization, how assessments relate to a taxpayer’s bill, and what factors do or do not influence the final amount owed
