The Shapes of the States, First Thirteen States
The Shapes of the States, First Thirteen States
Please join us on January 11 for a fascinating look at how the original thirteen colonies got their shapes and how as the new country was forming some of those shapes were changed. This is the first part of a four part series on The Shapes of the States. The second part will be presented February 8 and cover the Midwest Territory and the states which were carved from in. The third part March 8 will focus on the immense land which was acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. Finally the fourth part April 12 will take us to the mountainous and desert lands of the West and the long Pacific Coast.
But for this Saturday, we can pause and realize how much the fledgling states had to tackle as they jostled with their neighbors for land. It is startling to learn how much land Virginia claimed hundreds of miles away and how New York and Vermont came to terms with the boundary between them.
This is how our country began and while we learn to memorize the original 13 colonies, there is so much more to learn about how they came to be.
