How The States Got Their Shapes – Part 4: The Southwest and Pacific Coast States
This month Brad Keyes is going to wrap up our look at how the states got their shapes by learning that the American people were not done with expansion. The concept of Manifest Destiny was the common belief in the 19th century and some people felt it gave them the right to expand the United States clear across North America from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Discover why our border with present day Canada is at the 49th parallel and not the 50th or 48th. Learn why we went to war with Mexico and what we gained from it, and why we used thievery to take land away from Spain and Hawaii. Understand what the Gadsden Purchase and Seward’s Folly added to the country.
