2026 World Music Festival (April 7-11) School of Music, Northern Illinois University

The 2026 World Music Festival (April 7-April 11)
Sonic Tapestry: Global Traditions & Cultural Crossroads

The NIU School of Music is proud to present the 2026 World Music Festival, a five-day immersive journey through the sounds, traditions, and contemporary innovations of global music. Running from April 7 through April 11, the festival will transform the NIU campus into a vibrant cultural crossroads, featuring traditional masterworks alongside world-premiere compositions.

This festival is more than a series of concerts; it is a celebration of how music bridges cultures and disciplines. From the intricate melodies of Thailand to the cutting-edge fusion of modern composers, we are providing a 'hub' for global artistry right here on NIU campus in DeKalb.

Festival Schedule (All concerts are free and open to the public)

• April 7 (7:00-8:00pm, Recital Hall) | Music of Thailand: An exploration of the rich tonal tapestry and traditional instruments of Thailand and Laos complemented by a cultural exhibition in the lobby where participants can immerse themselves in the vibrant traditions of Songkran (Thai New Year) through displays and festive activities celebrating the spirit of New Year.

• April 8 (7:00-8:00pm, Recital Hall) | Music of East Asia: A journey through East Asia’s musical evolution—bridging folk traditions with the global influence of modern pop.

• April 9 (7:00-9:00pm, Concert Hall) | Music of Mexico: A vibrant showcase of the rhythmic energy and melodic soul of Mexican musical heritage presented by Banda and Mariachi NIU.

• April 10 (7:00-8:30pm, Recital Hall) | Sounds of Crossing Borders: A highlight of the festival featuring the original works of several acclaimed composers including Hong Da Chin, Ka Nin Chan, David Gordon, and Greg Beyer.
o Hong Da Chin’s Recital: A deeply personal and technical exploration of cross-cultural composition performed by an exciting array of performers including guest artists from Wisconsin and Toronto, Canada.
o Arcomusical: The Berimbau in Motion: a curated set of works exploring the intersection of Afro-Brazilian tradition and modern chamber music, centered on the mesmerizing sound of the berimbau (musical bow), a collaboration with Arcomusical, a pioneering ensemble dedicated to the promotion of the berimbau, an Afro-Brazilian musical bow with close ties to the body game of capoeira Angola.

• April 11 (3:00-5:00pm, Concert Hall) | Global Traditions & Cultural Crossroads: The concluding World Music Concert, bringing together performers from across the week for a spectacular collective celebration.
