A northern Illinois congressman will serve on the select committee to investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. Republican Adam Kinzinger has been one of the few vocal critics of former president Donald Trump within his party. The first hearing of the committee is Tuesday.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Kinzinger who will join Wyoming's Liz Cheney as the two Republicans chosen by Pelosi to serve on the nine-person panel. Kinzinger voted in favor of impeaching Trump following the attack on the Capitol.
The appointment follows Pelosi's decision to reject two of the five Republicans tapped for the panel by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy.
In a statement, Kinzinger said“Self-governance requires accountability and responsibility.”
