Perspective: Hide Your Light Under A Bushel

It’s my perspective that we have quite a lot of God-fearing perspectives on this here radio station…and it’s about time that we restore some balance.

Without fear of reprisals, I am an atheist. It’s no big deal…I just don’t have the faith that you religious types do. Whenever I hear/see someone who wears their religion on their sleeve, to my Midwestern mind, it’s quite off-putting. I keep my atheism to myself. I am sure you’re thrilled.

I was taught that religion was a personal thing, held tight for comfort in difficult times. Apparently, this is not a commonly held view. It’s quite often I hear people invoking, thanking and requesting God’s intervention on all sorts of stuff. Who ever said that was God’s job? And don’t get me started on televangelists.

With that in mind, here’s a perspective that you’re not going to hear very often: pretty please, stop your outward religiosity! I am thrilled that you found a god which pleases you in a flavor and timbre which gives you comfort. But I really don’t want to hear about your faith. Sorry.

So please, enough is enough. Instead of asking God for things, how about you fix stuff on your own: homelessness, hunger, hate crimes, politicians, the environment, poor education and terrible beer. That alone will keep your Sundays full. But for the love of…well, decency, enough invoking God. I think God would approve. And wouldn’t God want you to figure stuff out on your own anyway?

My name is John Harris and this remains my perspective.
