Illinois AG Releases Her Annual 'Safe Shopping Guide'

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 84 children’s items this year.

The Safe Shopping Guide details “dangerous” products like infant carriers at risk of detaching and jewelry kits that violate lead standards.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan says more safety hazards are popping up as technology continues to evolve.

“The typical hazards are still out there. Some of the really strong, rarer magnets, you have to be careful of those," Madigan said. "We are still finding toys where there’s lead in the paint. There’s some newer hazards that we’re seeing, with a lot of the items that you charge and have the lithium batteries."

Madigan urges shoppers to be cautious when looking at secondhand stores and online.

“What we’ve learned over the years is that when items are recalled, probably no more than five percent of them ever get back to the store or the manufacturer," Madigan said. "And it’s one of the reasons that we think this is a great time of year for people to determine, ‘Hey. Do I have anything in my home that could be dangerous for my children?’”

Madigan first issued her guide in 2007.
