The inaugural Tim Emmons Memorial Scholarship was awarded today to Tammy Terwelp, Director of Content and Programming at Essential Public Media in Pittsburgh.
The scholarship, presented by the Public Radio Program Directors Association, celebrates the life of Tim Emmons, longtime Program Director and General Manager of Northern Public Radio. He died in February after a long struggle with cancer.
Emmons continually worked to bring better public service to listeners of WNIJ and WNIU and to listeners nationwide. He helped develop and run the Morning Edition Graduate School to assist individual public radio stations in improving their broadcasts of the NPR flagship news magazine.
The Tim Emmons Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded annually, is meant to help train and mentor new and aspiring Program Directors in public radio.
