Budget Proposal Cuts School Transportation Funding

IDOT

School districts across Illinois could receive less money for school buses next year. Governor Pat Quinn's budget proposal would reduce transportation funding by 70% to $60 million.

In the Plainfield School District, Assistant Superintendent Angela Smith says they've saved some money by having students meet at stops. But she says parents aren't thrilled about it.

"Ideally, for a parent, the bus stop would be at the bottom of their driveway. That ship has sailed. That ship has sailed long ago and we're now corner stops only. You know, in this day and age, parents don't like the idea that my child is out of sight to get to their bus stop, but we've had to do what we've had to do.” -Supt. Angela Smith

The governor's office says the reduction is necessary, and that they'd rather cut money for buses than for classrooms.
