State university retirement clarification

By Susan Stephens

DeKalb, IL – On Monday, April 26th, WNIJ aired a story about Governor Pat Quinn's proposal to require retired state and university employees to pay a portion of their health insurance premiums. The story stated that retired state and university employees with at least twenty years of service do not pay anything for health insurance. Currently, 90 percent of retired state employees do not pay for their health insurance. Additionally, retired community college employees already pay a portion of their insurance premiums. They fall under the State Universities Retirement System, but have a different benefit plan than state employees.
