30 Reasons To Love WNIJ

Apr 1, 2021
Jenna Dooley

WNIJ signed on the air in 1991, and the programming previously provided by WNIU was split into two distinct services.  WNIU became an all-classical music station, and WNIJ provided news, jazz and entertainment.

As the broadcast arm of Northern Illinois University, the mission of Northern Public Radio is to enrich, inspire and inform adults in northern Illinois through programs and services that share ideas, encourage thought, give pleasure and create community.  For the past 30 years, students, staff, and volunteers have spent every day to meet your need for in-depth news, information, and entertainment. In April, we want to celebrate just a sampling of the reasons you love WNIJ.

"Go beyond the headlines" is the invitation from On Point, a news and issues program produced by WBUR in Boston. Next month, the program gets a new host -- Dave Folkenflik -- and a new station: WNIJ.

NPR listeners are familiar with Folkenflik's reports on the news media during Morning Edition and All Things Considered. On Aug. 24, he'll start a new job as the Friday host for On Point, which will air from 11 a.m. to Noon Central Time on WNIJ.

Come see the new space! Join Northern Public Radio and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra as we celebrate the opening of our new combined space at the Riverfront Museum Park with an open house and Rockford Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony this afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m.  The doors will open at 3 p.m. The ribbon cutting will be at 3:30 p.m. followed by tours and refreshments.

Cleanup crews are working to collect contamination caused by a broken elevator at Northern Public Radio’s studios in DeKalb. Anyone familiar with WNIJ and WNIU’s studios on First Street may have noticed an increasing number of containment barrels, tanks, and other equipment in the parking lot.

Illinoisans continue to struggle along in the state with the “worst in the nation“ public pension system.    Now, the cries for reform are louder than ever as the deficit continues to snowball.

If you need to reach someone at Northern Public Radio today, email is still the best way to go! Much of Northern Illinois University's phone system has been down since a lightning strike on campus at 8:30 Wednesday morning.

WNIJ Wants Your Opinion!

Apr 7, 2013

As a WNIJ listener, you're probably aware that we've been working hard for the past couple of years to stay ahead of rapid changes in the radio landscape.

Now we're asking for your opinion. Our goal is to continue to provide the news and entertainment you want and the way that you want them, so we invite you to share your opinions about technology in our annual survey.

State of the Re:Union is back on WNIJ

Oct 31, 2012

WNIJ brings you a new season of State of the Re:Union.  Our specials air on five consecutive Sundays at 6pm, beginning this weekend. With so much talk about "community," sometimes we lose perspective on the real stories of the people working to make homes, lives, and neighborhoods across the country. On State of the Re:Union, Public Radio Talent Quest winner Al Letson travels the country to find those stories -- and tells them with grace, perspective, and deep curiosity.

Northern Public Radio’s interim Director and General Manager is now permanent.  Staci Hoste succeeds Tim Emmons, who died last February.  She’ll continue to lead WNIJ, Classical WNIU and NIRIS, a reading service for the visually impaired.  Hoste joined the organization in 2008 as its Development Director, or chief fundraiser.  She says raising money will remain a priority for her.
