Students are taping drywall they hung a few weeks ago. The sound of hammers and saws echo from another room.

“This house here was built last year at Guilford. You were in that class, right?” said Jack Turner. He’s the construction manager at Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity. “Yeah, so they built the house last year.”

The student he just spoke to is in a construction class at Guilford High School. The class works both semesters and builds one house per year.

During a recent visit to an elementary school in Rockford, the kids were making catapults in the MakerSpace lab. The lab is one of the central hubs of the STEAM Academy at Haskell Elementary. It’s in a new modular building, housed next to their 60-year-old school.

On weeks they don’t get to work in the MakerSpace lab, students try their hand at Lego education.

At the beginning of the school year, Rockford Public Schools experienced a ransomware cyberattack knocking out digital equipment across the district. More than a month later, the technology is still not all the way back.

The most important services, like their online grading and attendance systems just returned at the end of last week. But, whether they work perfectly or not can still be hit and miss.

Mel Gilfillan is the president of the Rockford Education Association. He said he’s been hearing similar concerns from teachers in the district.

Rockford Public Schools held a job fair Monday for anyone who was qualified and interested in teaching positions.

Executive Principal for Jefferson High School Don Rundall was very excited about the applicants who attended.

“I think we’ve had a pretty good turnout this morning," Rundall said. "I’ve actually already filled a couple of positions I’ve needed filled, so I’m very excited with the turnout we’ve had; and the level of applicants is pretty high.”

The Rockford Public School District is hosting a teacher job fair for those looking to move forward in their careers in sculpting young minds.

Some specific areas of teaching will be special targets, but Mercedes Brain – the Director of Talent Acquisition for Rockford Public Schools – says that shouldn’t discourage anyone from attending the fair.

Nine hours of contract negotiations between the Rockford School district and its teachers have ended: teachers will hit the picket lines Thursday morning.
