It’s the end of the line for Rochelle rail car maker Nippon Sharyo. It appears the company is shuttering its Illinois plant.

In 2012, the announcement that the Japanese rail car manufacturer had selected Rochelle for its massive factory came with much fanfare. Japan’s ambassador to the U.S. Ichiro Fujisaki and then-governor Pat Quinn helped cut the ribbon at a celebration while Taiko Japanese drums thundered in the cavernous building.

UPDATE, 11:00 a.m. 7/1/17: Most roads have reopened in Plainfield after a train carrying crude oil derailed about 40 miles southwest of Chicago.

Plainfield police say it will take several days to clean up an estimated 45,000 gallons of oil near Route 59 and Riverwalk Court, near the village's downtown business district.

Twenty train cars belonging to Canadian National Railway derailed around 7 p.m. Friday. Oil leaked from at least two cars and possibly a third.

There were no injuries. Police say Plainfield residents are not in any immediate danger.

Anywhere you go in America, you are never far from railroad tracks. Someone has to maintain all of those tracks. And someone has to build the machines to do it. That’s why the owners of a Rockford company want Congress to know railway maintenance is a five-billion dollar industry that deserves support.

It's time to ride the rails with Free Range Radio as we celebrate National Train Day.

The Illinois Tollway Authority now has state approval to consider adding rail service on its property. But supporters of the new law say it would probably take a while for any such project to materialize.
