A Chicago student won the Illinois state championship for a national poetry competition.

Catherine Herrera is a senior at William Howard Taft High School. The 17-year-old first took part in the Poetry Out Loud contest a few years ago. She said she originally entered the contest because she loves performance theater.

Two Jefferson High School students in Rockford have advanced in a virtual nationwide spoken word competition.

Raeanna Tremethick and Emma Carmona have moved on to the Poetry Out Loud virtual state competition.

The contest showcases the talents of high school performance poets across the nation. The students present poems from established poets.

National Poetry Month isn’t until April but some Rockford high school students are preparing now for an upcoming spoken word showdown.

Poetry Out Loud is a competition that takes place for high school students across the country. This year young poets at Jefferson High School are participating.

Rockford is getting not just one, but two poets laureate -- an adult and a youth.

The adult poet laureate position will be a two-year position, and probably one year long for the youth. Rockford Area Arts Council (RAAC) Executive Director Mary McNamara Bernsten said the committee is still working that out. But, she said, people may start nominating poets next week.
