A Springfield man accused of killing a Special Deputy US Marshal last year in Rockford is now facing more charges.

Floyd Brown was originally charged with one count of killing a federal law enforcement officer and two counts of illegal firearm possession, in connection with the death of McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Keltner. Keltner was a member of the US Marshals Service fugitive task force and was attempting to serve Brown a warrant at a Rockford hotel when he was fatally shot.

The 39-year-old Springfield man accused of killing McHenry County Sheriff's Deputy Jacob Keltner pleaded not guilty in federal court in Rockford Wednesday morning. 

A federal grand jury indicted Floyd E. Brown Tuesday for Keltner's death earlier this month. Keltner was working as a member of a U.S. Marshals Service task force when he was shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant at a Rockford hotel.

Deputy Keltner Honored And Remembered At Funeral

It was standing room only in a Woodstock North High School gym on Wednesday morning. A sea of Illinois law enforcement, friends, and family mourned the loss of Deputy Jacob Keltner at his funeral.

Keltner was shot and killed in Rockford a week earlier while helping to serve an arrest warrant.

The 35-year-old was a Special U.S. Marshal and a Deputy with the McHenry County Sheriff's Department.

Red and blue lights flashed for miles in Rockford Thursday night as police officers and firefighters from across the region took part in a procession across the city. They accompanied the body of a McHenry County Deputy Sheriff from the hospital where he died to the coroner’s office.

The man accused of the murder of a McHenry County Deputy Sheriff in Rockford Thursday will be returned to Winnebago County to face charges.

Floyd E. Brown, 39, is charged with first degree murder for the shooting death of Deputy Jacob Keltner, who died Thursday afternoon in a Rockford hospital. Keltner was working with a fugitive task force from the U.S. Marshals office as they tried to serve a warrant on Brown, a Springfield resident who was staying at the Extended Stay America hotel on Rockford’s east side.
