Enthusiasm ran high on the campus of Northern Illinois University yesterday as the public met the school’s next president for the first time. The Board of Trustees hired 57-year-old Doug Baker from the University of Idaho to lead the school beginning July First.

Douglas D. Baker, Provost and Executive Vice President at the University of Idaho, has been selected as the twelfth president of Northern Illinois University.

An award-winning professor of business and scholar of management and leadership in higher education, Baker, 57, will assume the presidency on July 1.

NIU’s Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to hire the 57-year-old Baker, an expert in organizational strategy, structure and motivation.

Charges have been dropped against one of Northern Illinois University’s top financial officials. University controller Keith Jackson was charged last year with two felonies and one misdemeanor related to the so-called “coffee fund” scandal.

Augustana College will now allow same-gender weddings and "blessings of unions" on campus. President Steven Bahls notified faculty, staff and students of the decision to allow same-sex ceremonies after a recommendation from campus chaplains Richard Priggie and Kristen Glass Perez.

The school, located in Rock Island, Ill., is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which issued its Statement on Sexuality in 2009, leaving decisions on same-sex ceremonies up to individual congregations.

Regional Superintendents Studying Realignment

Advance Illinois has issued a "report card" on Illinois' public schools. The advocacy group has a number of suggestions for improvement, but they're not the sort of things that had been getting all the attention in Springfield this year.

Northern Illinois University President John  Peters announced during his State of the University address that he will step aside next June.  The newly-formed, 28-person search committee met for the first time last week and will formally meet again next month.  NIU Faculty Senate President Alan Rosenbaum co-chairs the search committee.

Deputy Police Chief takes the reins

Northern Illinois University has placed its police chief on administrative leave. Chief Donald Grady and Lt. Kartik Ramakrishnan are facing disciplinary proceedings by the university. Deputy Chief of Police Darren Mitchell, a member of the NIU Police Department since 2000 who also serves as executive director of the Office of Emergency Management and Planning, was named Sunday to take command of the 38-member force until an acting chief is named.

The Geneva Education Association and the Geneva Board of Education reached a tentative agreement Monday, November 12 at 12:30 a.m. on a new contract. With this tentative Agreement, school will be in session on Monday, November 12.

Alcohol may be behind the death of a Northern Illinois University freshman. 19-year-old David Bogenberger was found unresponsive in a bed at a fraternity house this morning. He was pronounced dead half an hour later.

George Reid came to the Illinois Board of Higher Education in December 2010. He'd been a top official at a similar agency in Maryland. Less than two years later, Reid says he's resigning for personal reasons.

Illinois students' academic performance fell slightly, at least according to No Child Left Behind standards.  82 percent of Illinois school districts failed to meet what's known as "Adequate Yearly Progress" under the federal No Child Left Behind program.

The Rockford Public School Board has named Ehren Jarrett as its new Superintendent.  The board will begin contract negotiations with the possibility of Jarrett assuming his new role July 1, 2013. Interim Superintendent Robert Willis is expected to stay on until then.
