A group of climate change activists is making its way from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C.  Tuesday, they set up camp in DeKalb, pitching their tents and solar panels on Northern Illinois University’s campus near Northern Public Radio’s studio.

 “The Great March For Climate Action” plans to deliver its message to the President, Congress, ANYONE who’ll listen, in the nation’s capitol in November.

David Zahrt says he’s the oldest activist who has been along for the whole trip… he’s 77. And he’s doing it for his grandchildren.

Rockford is moving forward with a massive 10-year plan to revamp its elementary schools. The School Board approved the 250-million dollar plan last night on a five to one vote, with one abstention.

A plan to close eight Rockford elementary schools and build two new ones is on its way to a vote by the school board. Last night, the school district held the last of 39 public meetings about the proposal.

State university employees are rushing to retire because of last year’s state pension reform law. Now a new interpretation of that law indicates it may not drastically reduce pension amounts for some retirees  after all.

Rockford needs fewer, larger elementary schools. More modern classrooms. One early education center for each quadrant of the city. It’s all part of a $250 million plan to improve  every elementary school, except for the 7 to 9 targeted for closing.

Northern Illinois University’s President Doug Baker has called for increasing the school’s ties with Chinese institutions. That would include having more students from China on the DeKalb campus.  In one school within the university, a number are already here -- and have been for a long time.

67 Cortland Elementary School students and staff members were admitted to Kishwaukee Hospital's emergency room today after complaining of nausea: they were sickened by a strong smell from the nearby Waste Management landfill.

'Coffee Fund' Case Comes To An End

The Northern Illinois University “coffee fund” investigation has come to an end with a plea agreement this week with the last of nine original defendants.

Kenneth Pugh, 57, director of NIU’s Materials Management department, was one of three supervisors who pled guilty to a misdemeanor for their roles in the case.

Charges against six of the nine NIU employees charged with felonies were dismissed. Seven of the defendants have returned to work at NIU and one more is expected to return soon. One retired before charges were filed

NIU Summer Term Gets In Gear

The first week of the Northern Illinois University summer session has begun as students returned to campus Monday, making campus look and feel like its normal self.  

The Office of Admissions has already noticed a difference in students’ activity. “The pace has picked up in the past week,” said Associate Director of Admissions Chuck Walz, “with students acquiring information about enrollment as well as applying for financial aid.”

Northern Illinois University President John Peters still has seven weeks left on the job – but Monday, the campus and community came together to say goodbye.

Fourteen people were injured after a stabbing incident at a Houston-area college.

The Lone Star College System put its Cy-Fair campus on lockdown on Tuesday following the stabbing. One suspect — a 21-year-old man who was enrolled in the school — was apprehended.

Harris County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that medical personnel said 14 people were "wounded in the stabbing in which a suspect was detained this morning."
