We’ve heard about a place having a particular sound – like the London Beat or the Motown Sound. But what about Illinois? A new exhibit that focuses on the Illinois sound – or really, sounds -- is coming to a downstate attraction.

Lance Tawzer is the director of exhibits and shows at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. He said “The State of Sound: A World of Music from Illinois” covers a wide variety of genres.

Pandemic living has inspired the theme for an annual statewide art contest.

The student contest is sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Heather Nice is the library and museum's education director. She said the theme “Art Surrounds Us” encompasses how some people are using art as a relief during COVID-19.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum will begin welcoming visitors again on Monday, Jan. 25. The museum said clear, simple safety protocols will be in place to protect all guests.

Visitors will need to schedule their appointments in advance so the number of people in the building at any one time can be held to safe levels. Visitors will also have to wear masks that cover the mouth and nose, answer basic health questions and have their temperatures taken before they can enter.

A new report from the Illinois Auditor General found problems at the Springfield attraction that tells the story of Lincoln and maintains numerous historic items.  Auditor General Frank Mautino’s report, which spans a two year period ending last June, suggested corrections and improvements in 15 areas.

John Wilkes Booth is a villain in history.  Yet, he had a prominent spot in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield.

Since the facility opened in 2005, a sinister statue of Booth shadowed the Lincoln family as visitors entered the main plaza.  But that's not the case anymore.

Spokesman Chris Wills said a decision was made to remove the statue.  “The leadership here…talked it over, listened to what guests had to say and staff, and decided that wasn’t the appropriate place to deal with John Wilkes Booth and what he did.”

The Illinois House is advancing a proposal to revamp the management of the state-run Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Since it opened a decade ago, the Lincoln museum has been under the control of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The museum has its own advisory board, but House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie says those advisors were frustrated.

The director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum supports the proposed separation of the museum from its current government home, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.

But Sunny Fischer, the chair of the IHPA, says the existing structure works well as it is.

"This structure calls for IHPA to handle administrative work like accounting and human resources, while leaving the presidential library and museum free to focus on serving the public as it has done so well," Fischer said.

Lincoln Library, Commerce Department Linked Under New Plan

A measure that would partially privatize the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity while combining it with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is ready for consideration by the Illinois House.

The apparent agreement between Gov. Bruce Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan also would make a new state entity to control the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Steven Beckett, who chairs the library's advisory board, supports the move. He says the various groups in charge of it now have become hostile.

At an announcement this week, Clare Thorpe, who manages guest services at the museum, listed off a variety of events which will help celebrate the coming milestones, from the scholarly to the family-friendly. She says the museum is going digital; through tablets and smart-phones, visitors will be able to access supplemental info:

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency will maintain control of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and not divide it--for now, at least.

The library and museum in Springfield is one of Preservation Agency's top attractions. But leaders of the two entities and a supporting foundation have reportedly been at odds--to the point that House Speaker Mike Madigan is proposing to split the museum off on its own.
