A woman who is thought to be the last of the original Rockford Peaches has died. Mary Pratt pitched in the inaugural season of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1943. That team was immortalized in the 1992 film “A League of Their Own.”

The Rockford area has a long history of women’s baseball, from the Rockford Peaches in the '40s and '50s to today’s Starfires. Now it’s trying to capitalize on that history by wooing the International Women’s Baseball Center to build a museum there.

Rockford has a long, proud baseball history:  it’s where sports pioneer Albert Spalding got his start. It’s where every company in town had its own industrial league team. And during World War Two, the most famous women’s professional baseball team drew thousands of fans. Now there’s a new team trying to revive the tradition of women playing hardball.
