Underwear Because We Care

An effort to help the homeless and others in need in the Quad Cities has had such a successful year, for the first time, it's going to hold a second distribution. The group is called Underwear Because We Care, and it began collecting new underwear, including t-shirts, bras, and socks four years ago and giving it to various shelters and other organizations.

Group chair, Grant Curtis, says in their first year they collected several hundred items and gave them to nine local agencies. Told him many of their clients had no underwear.

With other members of SaintAlban'sEpiscopal Church in Davenport, Curtis first heard about a similar campaign in Dubuque four years ago during a conference, and thought it would work here too, but it would require more than just his church to be successful. Their most recent campaign, in October, brought in 46-hundred items of new underwear, and they were given to 25 organizations, including Christian Care, the Catholic Worker House, Family Resources, and Community Health Care.

The group is planning another distribution for February.

Tax deductible donations can be made to Underwear Because We Care - by mail or by email. (Box 2242, Davenport, Ia. 52809)(underwearBWC@gmail.com)

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
