The 2018 race for Illinois governor could be the most expensive in U.S. history. With nine months until election day, the five leading candidates have raised more than $136 million, already exceeding any other contest before in Illinois. Democrat J.B. Pritzker has spent over $34 million of his $49 million campaign chest in an attempt to win the Democratic nomination. And a once sleepy Republican race has seen shifting alliances in recent weeks, after billionaire Dick Uihlein gave $2.5 million to Gov. Bruce Rauner's challenger, Illinois House Rep. Jeanne Ives, who opposes abortion and rights for gay and transgender people. To track this money circus, ProPublica Illinois has created a graphic that will update with the latest fundraising information.

Two Democratic Gubernatorial Candidates Release Tax Returns, But Not All Are Satisfied

After months of promising to release their tax returns, two Democratic candidates for Illinois governor released them -- partially.

Chris Kennedy and J.B. Pritzker both released the top pages of their tax returns - but not much else. Kennedy and his wife reported to the IRS that they earned $1.2 million dollars last year. Meanwhile, Pritzker - an heir to the Hyatt Hotel fortune - reported earning almost $15 million with his wife last year, nearly $10 million in 2015, and $3 million in 2014.

State Sen. Daniel Biss, another Democrat running for governor, accused Pritzker and Kennedy of hiding their full returns. Biss released five years' worth of full tax returns earlier this year - showing his family’s income is just from his legislative salary. Last year he reported $32,000.
