Two Area GOP Representatives Not Seeking Re-Election

Republican State Representatives Bob Pritchard of Hinckley and Barbara Wheeler of Crystal Lake announced on Monday that they will not seek re-election next term.

According to a news release, Pritchard said some state challenges result from representatives serving too long and not being open to compromise on difficult issues.

“I think we have a better system of government when more citizens take time from their careers to run for public office, and experience the challenges of making public policy for their communities or for a state as diverse as Illinois,” Pritchard said.

He has served the 70th district, which represents portions of DeKalb, Boone, and Kane counties, for more than 14 years.

Pritchard said he plans to spend more time in the family farming operations. His term ends in January 2019.

Wheeler, who was elected in 2012 to serve the 64th district in parts of McHenry and Lake counties, said her decision to step down came after the sudden death of her mother and the stress from pushing reforms in Springfield.

She said she does not have specific plans after her term but wants to stay active in Springfield.

Wheeler said the General Assembly needs a younger generation of leaders.
