Before he'll agree to raise money to prevent massive budget cuts, Gov. Bruce Rauner says Illinois must pass a freeze on property taxes. His plan also calls for changes to the prevailing wage, a move that threaten unions.
The House has frequently voted down that concept.
Now, a group of Democratic Senators -- including Kim Lightford of Maywood -- are poised to try. They're set to unveil a plan Wednesday morning.
“We have some ideas on the table to compromise with the governor in areas of property tax reform and school funding; tying those areas together with some pension relief for Chicago Public Schools,” Lightford said. “We're trying to keep the schools open and teachers staffed.”
Lightford says she's not sure how that idea will be received, but she says it's an attempt at reaching a compromise. Illinois has been without a budget for two weeks.
