Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault announced his resignation Monday.
It comes in the wake of an April 8 incident where an Elgin officer was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence. Theriault was informed of the officer's detention and allegedly "un-arrested" the officer, releasing him without charges.
The police chief was placed on paid leave while the case was investigated by Lansing-based REM Management Services. Investigators found that Theriault and the Elgin officer, Sgt. Mark Whatley, had known each other when working together in the Elgin Police Department.
The Daily Chronicle reports Theriault's resignation agreement awards him three months' salary as well as an additional three months of unused vacation time. It also releases him from any liability to the city, including the April 8 "un-arrest" incident.
Deputy Chief Jim Winters will carry out Theriault's duties in the interim.
