Second ARTigras Celebration Kicks Off This Weekend

Carl Nelson / WNIJ

A DeKalb arts celebration kicks off Friday night. It’s the second year for ARTigras.

Events begin with a “March To Bourbon Street” at the Egyptian Theatre in downtown DeKalb. It’s designed to emulate the New Orleans culture.

Dana Stover serves on the ARTigras planning committee. She says it’s an opportunity for people to celebrate fine arts.

“What stands out first is just the community spirit – that it brings together the school of NIU, the city of DeKalb, surrounding areas, Kishwaukee College. And it brings everyone together," Stover said.

Stover says the event’s artwork is more inclusive than just paintings.

“Art, really, it’s more than just the two-dimensional art that hangs on a wall. There’s going to be dancing, there’s going to be music, there are colorful costumes many will be wearing. And you’ll have a chance to meet the actual artists who produce the art," Stover said.

Contributors range from K-12 to Northern Illinois University students.

Events include music concerts, visual displays, and dance performances. The activities are geared for all ages.

ARTigras runs through Saturday night.
