Several northern Illinois communities have reached out to their local police departments after five Dallas officers were killed in a sniper attack last week.
“In law enforcement, there is a bond and brotherhood of the understanding of what each other does in the performance of our duties, and anytime a police officer’s life is lost in the course of duty, it is a sad moment for all of us,” DeKalb Police commander Jason Leverton said.
Meals, baked goods, notes – those are only a handful of gifts area police departments have received from residents. The DeKalb police department is no exception.
“I even had, personally at church on Sunday, a person who I didn’t even know handed me a thank you card and said, ‘I’m aware of the job that you do, and I just wanted to thank you and support you and let you know I’m praying for you,’” Leverton said. “And I thought that was very nice.”
Leverton says he thinks DeKalb residents support the police most of the time, but he says the added reinforcement in the last week was encouraging.
