Perspective: Lessons From My Two-Year-Old

One of my roles in life is that of mother. And to be sure, it’s my favorite. I have a two-year-old son, and while I’m perpetually teaching him what I believe are important things for him to know, he in turn teaches me the lessons that are most precious.

First is self-love. As a one year old, he mastered the art of the Little Tikes slide; he would then promptly clap for himself upon reaching the bottom. Shouldn’t we all celebrate our daily successes with such enthusiasm?

Next is how to be supportive. When my son notices me being slightly stressed over car troubles, or a bit worried about something at home, he is quick to chime in with the words that pick me right up: “Mom, I will be your friend.”

Also, he teaches me bravery. When he perceives an injustice about which he feels strongly, he speaks truth to it with a “that’s not very kind.”

He shows me spontaneity with an impromptu howling at the moon, and he shows me mindfulness by pausing to appreciate the beauty of a butterfly. He is small, but he is mighty.

In a climate of divisiveness, scandal, and catastrophe, let us look to the children in our lives for the lessons that we as adults tend to forget. How can our world benefit by each of us practicing a little more self-love, support, bravery, and loving kindness? What beauty will you see, and how will those around you be impacted? I implore you to try it and find out.

I’m Jodi Ritter, and that’s my perspective.
