Perspective: How To Handle An Unexpected Transition

The numbers on the blood pressure gauge said it all -- 200 over 95. It was April 1st, 2002, but this was no April Fool's joke.

Earlier that day, I had learned that my teaching contract in a suburban school district would not be renewed. For a number of reasons, I realized that this would, effectively, end a career.

But it wasn't the final day of school. There would be two full months of classes to teach, homework to grade, and administrative paperwork to complete. Most importantly, I told my students -- who came from multiple grade levels -- to give my successor a fair chance and keep an open mind during this transition.

Oh...did I say, "transition?" It's a word on the minds of many people these days. I like to think that I handled this transition better than a certain individual is handling his own.

The Bible tells us that for everything there is a season. You'll find it in the Book of Ecclesiastes, NOT "Two Corinthians."

I'm Jim Kline, and that is my Perspective.
